How to Choose Embroidery Fabric?

Choose embroidery cloth

In general, there are different types of cross stitch fabrics that we have come into contact with:
According to the country of origin: the best is German cloth, followed by French cloth, and Olympus cloth from Japan, as well as Korean cloth, Thai cloth and Chinese cloth. Of course, their price is also proportional to their quality. If it is within the acceptable range, natural German cloth is the first choice. But for embroiderers who have just started cross-stitching, I suggest that it is more suitable to use Korean cloth or Chinese cloth.

According to the division of the grid: cross-stitch cloth can also be divided into 32ct (count), 28CT, 18ct, 16ct, 14ct, 11ct and 9c, 8CT, and so on. The larger the amount, the grid will appear smaller.

According to the texture: cross-stitch cloth can be divided into plastic cloth (mainly embroidered pendants, wallets), cotton cloth, etc.

According to the color: the cross stitch fabrics are mainly white, bright red, black, dark blue, light blue, linen (beige), and pink.

Generally, there are no special requirements for cross-stitch cloth, and 11ct or 14ct cotton is selected. Of course, different works have different requirements. For example, cushions, baby bibs, etc., due to their special uses, require softer fabrics.

Many people start cross stitch on AIDA and then switch to linen or other EVENWEAVES when their embroiderers mature. Many embroiderers are more familiar with how to embroider on fine linen. In fact, this is entirely a personal choice, and there are many skilled embroiderers who like AIDA.

Evenweave refers to fabrics with the same number of yarns spun horizontally and vertically within the same length. Maybe the thickness of each yarn is not uniform - this can be clearly seen from linen - but the number of threads within a certain length is one Must be the same.

Embroidering cross stitch on AIDA is embroidering X in a square. On linen or other EVENWEAVES, because there are no small squares, it is usually embroidered across two strands of yarn on the cloth. This means that 28COUNT linen and 14COUNT AIDA are embroidered in the same size.

Everyone feels that AIDA feels far stiffer than EVENWEAVES fabrics. This can't say EVENWEAVES is good or bad, it is completely determined by personal preference. And the hardness of the embroidery cloth does not affect the choice of flower support or embroidery frame.

EVENWEAVES fully embodies its superiority when embroidering 1/4 stitch and 3/4 stitch. When embroidering two stitches on AIDA, we need to pierce the needle through the middle of a small square, and sometimes we have to use a thinner needle, such as a 26- or even 28-gauge needle. For embroidery on EVENWEAVES, you just need to pass the needle between the two strands of embroidered cloth, without any effort at all.
Also, some people think that holes can be seen more clearly on EVENWEAVES, others think that AIDA is easier.

Comparison of various embroidery fabrics

DMC cross stitch fabric

The side is the kind of square blue side posted upstairs, the hole is big and square, it feels a little hemp (cotton sizing), and the hand feels thin. The four cotton yarns are fine and the tightness is not strong. The embroidered fabric feels softer. One cloth can be used for two purposes (as a base cloth or a waist cloth).

DMC cross stitch cloth, the lattice is positive, the hand feeling is strong, the quality is very good, and the cost performance is high.

German cross stitch

The side is a small square orange side, the hole is smaller than DMC, it feels thicker, a little bit like silk or polyester, the hardness is not as strong as DMC, it is a warp and weft weaving method with two yarns on the top and two yarns on the bottom, The four cotton yarns are slightly thicker and more compact. The fabric feels soft after embroidery.

Korean cross stitch fabric

The side is a wavy black side, and the hole is between DMC and German cloth. It feels thinner and softer. Due to the advantage in the purchase price, operators buy this type of cloth more.

Chinese cross stitch cloth

The edge is wavy and blue, but there is no white edge with patterns. It feels soft, but the cotton yarn is thick. People with better embroidery skills can use it to make cushions and other household items. The pattern is best to choose a picture with less embroidery. Not suitable for framed paintings, the cloth surface is prone to pilling. It is good for beginners to practice with it.

Italian fabric

The chemical fiber fabric that has just appeared in China is similar to cc's chemical fiber fabric, but its cotton content ratio is about 8:2 (cotton: unknown fiber). The technical requirements are not high, and the weight of the hand will not make the hole deformed. It is a weaving method with three yarns on the top and three yarns on the bottom, and the textile tightness is extremely strong. It will also become soft after embroidery, but the hardness is still stronger than other fabrics. It is an excellent choice for embroidered and mounted paintings, especially large prints. The disadvantage is that the price is even higher than that of German cloth, and the embroidery thread is a bit abrasive.

Open cotton
Open cotton is a fabric without an edge band that can be sewn onto regular fabric for cross stitch! For example, the cloth that is hard to count can also be used for regular cross-stitching using this mesh-like open cotton cloth!

Plastic embroidery cloth
Cross-stitch plastic embroidery cloth, also known as texting or gingham cloth, is mainly used for embroidering card sleeves, double-sided embroidery mobile phone pendants, card holders, wallets, and other practical items. Commonly used are 14ct and 18ct embroidered cloth.

Embroidery calculation method

There is a convenient embroidery cloth calculation software that can be downloaded and used, and the size of the embroidered cloth can be calculated immediately by entering the grid number of the pattern and the specifications of the embroidered cloth, which is very convenient.

First of all, we must understand the CT in the embroidery fabric specification. CT is a unit of embroidery fabric specification. The translation is grid/inch, 14CT is 14 grids per inch, and so on.

Note: DMC embroidered cloth and some other European standard fabrics use pts/cm which means grid/cm 5.5 pts/cm is 5.5 grid/cm

1 inch=2.54 cm 5.5*2.54=13.97 so 5.5 pts/cm is 14CT

Knowing the unit of embroidery specifications, you can know how to calculate the size of the embroidery. The formula is as follows:

The net size of the embroidery pattern (cm) = the number of grids of the pattern / the number of CTs X 2.54

The result of the formula is the net size of the pattern. We need to add the size of the margins when cutting and buying fabrics. It is calculated by leaving 5 on each side, which is the net size + 10 cm.

Size calculation formula

Pattern cutting size of embroidered cloth (cm) = pattern grid number / CT number X 2.54 +10

In this way, the width (W) and height (H) of the pattern can be calculated separately.
The above formula is a bit of a fuss. we can remember

The number of centimeters of embroidered cloth = the number of grids multiplied by 2.54 divided by the number of CT +
